Carbon Emissions from the U.S. Healthcare System
The healthcare industry in the United States accounts for about 10% of the nation’s total carbon emissions, which is a considerable share. This makes healthcare one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.
A large portion of these emissions comes from the energy used in healthcare facilities—hospitals, medical offices, and clinics. Hospitals, for example, are energy-intensive, requiring constant heating, cooling, and lighting, along with large amounts of energy for medical equipment, sterilization, and other operations.
